Represenstative Assembly

Once a year, more than 1,000 delegates from local education associations around Washington State converge on Spokane for Representative Assembly. These delegates, through the democratic process, set organizational priorities for WEA for the upcoming year. This year Representative Assembly will be held April 19-21 at the Spokane Convention Center. Sub costs, hotel, meal stipend, and mileage are provided. Mount Vernon EA is allowed up to 8 delegates. We currently have five members interested in attending. If you are interested, please email me at mvea.prez@gmail.com soon to find out more information. Hurry before all spots are filled! You do NOT have to be a building rep or have been active in MVEA in the past to participate. Come be an active participant this year in our rep assembly!

MVEA Was In the Christmas Parade!

MVEA members joined members from other associations who serve our students to march in this year's downtown Mount Vernon Christmas Parade. Even Dr. Bruner joined us as we marched behind the MVHS marching band.

2017-2018 Contract

On August 30, 2017 the general membership of the MVEA voted to ratify our one-year contract with the MVSD. Please click HERE to read the contract. This is a one year deal due to the fact that the budget passed this last summer requires a complete rewriting of the SAM (salary allocation model- the state formula for paying teachers). Please stay in contact with your building reps for information on bargaining this year.

MVEA Supports Our Bargaining Team 08/28/2017

This Monday morning MVEA members turned out to support our bargaining team. We chanted, and waved signs as the district's bargaining team showed up at our new offices for today's round of bargaining. Be sure and stay tuned to your home email for updates and potential calls to action. If you are not on the home email list, send your home email to Greg at gdoud9010@dishmail.net .

Superintendents of ESD 189 Sent a Letter

The superintendents of ESD 189, including our own, sent an open letter to the governor and the legislature that asked for, among other things, serious restrictions on collective bargaining, an end to TRI pay, a state takeover of our health care and...the possibility of working Saturdays. You should read this letter, which can be found HERE. A response has been written and is gathering signatures in our buildings. It will be posted soon.

Have You Had a Catastrophic, Life Changing Event?

Have you suffered a serious, life-changing injury, illness or event personally or in your family? If so, you can talk to someone about financial options that may help your circumstance. The MVEA pays Bill Dehon a small stipend to advise members on their retirement. He has also said that members should contact him when they are faced with a catastrophic event in their lives. Bill has been serving us for years now. He does because he loves helping the hard-working teachers of the MVEA. Contact Bill if you think he can be of help to you.

We Rallied In Olympia on Monday (March 30) !

The word was out that the WEA wanted 250 members to show up at the hearing last Monday. Well...over 300 were there, wearing red. 322 had signed in as against the bill, and only around 20 in favor. And it looks like there was strength in numbers. Paul says the bill (ESSB 5748) did not make it out of committee, and is dead. At least for now. This is what happens when we show up for the fight

Have You Checked Out the Documents Page?

Our documents page is a treasure trove of information for MVEA members. From VOICE issues to clock hour FAQs, to financial statements. And of course, the CBA (collective bargaining agreement).

New VOICE Format

In an effort to better serve members, the format of the VOICE newsletter has changed. There will be a short version, which will be a hard copy, and distributed to every MVEA member. There will also be an online VOICE website which will feature the content from the paper VOICE, as well as extended content for members who wish to spend more time with the voices of your association. As this online version is built, please let us know what kind of content you would like in your MVEA newsletter.

Home Email?

Are you a new member? An old member with a new email? If you would like to recieve mail from our home mail list, please email Greg to add you address to the list. Messages home are often messages that the law prohibits us from sending through the district MVEA address. Political messages, like supporting a levy, or an initiative, cannot be sent to the all_mvea address list. To email Greg, click HERE.
